We’ve all grappled with managing a slew of passwords for our online accounts, from financial institutions, to meal delivery services, to social media platforms. Once touted as the impenetrable fortress of our digital castles, passwords have become the #1 way cybercriminals get unauthorized access into a system and to our personal information.
The problem is twofold: the first flaw in password-based security is that it relies on common internet users to create, manage, and regularly update complex passwords. This relates to password pitfalls, such as weak choices, continuous reuse, and failure to regularly update passwords. In fact, 81% of data breaches in 2022 were due to weak, reused, or stolen passwords. The second flaw comes down to how passwords are stored behind the scenes: modern computer hardware provides weak entry points and can be hacked in a fraction of a second.
Biometric authentication, which relies on physical and behavioral characteristics, provides a promising alternative to passwords in that it has an incredibly low false acceptance rate: 1 in 1.2 million for facial recognition and 1 in 50,000 for fingerprint recognition. But not all digital users have access to biometric-enabled devices.
